Reducing Single Use Plastic

Sutherland Shire Council is committed to eliminating the use of single use plastics through its operating procedures, events and daily practices.

With just a little bit of planning, you too can choose reusable options and reduce single use plastics.  “Single use plastics” are disposable plastic items such as straws, balloons, bags, sachets, cutlery and food and drink packaging intended to be used once and then discarded.

The following tips will get you started with reducing your single use plastics:

  1. Bring your own reusable bags when you go shopping
  2. Take your cup to the coffee shop and refuse takeaway coffee cups
  3. Say no to plastic cutlery and straws
  4. Bring your own drink bottle and lunch box
  5. Choose products with less plastic packaging
  6. Use reusable wraps and containers in the kitchen to store food
  7. Use non plastic alternatives - e.g bamboo toothbrush
  8. Buy second hand.
